Utilitarianism and equality for quasilinear or Gorman-form preferences

چکیده
The paper shows that if utility is cardinally measurable and fully interpersonally comparable and the utility profile satisfies (a) a happier person has lower marginal utility of the numeraire or wealth, and (b) “everybody is equally unhappy in hell,” the utilitarian criterion is egalitarian for quasilinear economies or Gorman-form preferences . Utilitarianism - Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia
Utilitarianism is the ethical doctrine that the moral worth of an action is solely determined by its contribution to overall utility. It is thus a form of consequentialism, meaning that the moral worth of an action is determined by its outcome—the ends justify the means. Utility — the good to be maximized — has been defined by various thinkers as happiness or pleasure (versus sadness or pain), ...
متن کاملA concern about low relative income, and the alignment of utilitarianism with egalitarianism
A utilitarian social planner who maximizes social welfare assigns the available income to those who are most efficient in converting income into utility. However, when individuals are concerned about their income falling behind the incomes of others, the optimal income distribution under utilitarianism is equality of incomes. متن کاملOptimality conditions and comparative static properties of non-linear income taxes revisited
Optimality conditions and comparative static properties of the optimal Mirrleesian nonlinear income tax are obtained for a nite population and quasilinear-in-consumption preferences. Contrary to Weymark (1987) who considers quasilinear-in-leisure preferences, the linearity with respect to gross income, which is observed by the government and used as a tax base, is lost. A reduced-form optimal i...

Decentralizing Equality of Opportunity and Issues Concerning the Equality of Educational Opportunity Caterina Calsamiglia 2005 This dissertation explores issues concerning local versus global equality of opportunity, the presence of inequality for education attainment and the optimality of policies addressing such problems. The literature distinguishes between two different approaches to distri...
متن کاملMulti-utilitarianism in two-agent quasilinear social choice
We introduce a new class of rules for resolving quasilinear social choice problems. These rules extend those of Green [6]. We call such rules multi-utilitarian rules. Each multi-utilitarian rule is associated with a probability measure over the set of weighted utilitarian rules, and is derived as the expectation of this probability. These rules are characterized by the axioms efficiency, transl...
